Tysons Corner Center Mall in Northern Virginia is in many ways the nexus of the construction activities associated with the multi-billion dollar Virginia Megaprojects highway improvement effort and the Dulles Airport rail expansion for the Washington Metro. With this in mind, VDOT approached Redmon with the intent of developing a collection of digital information displays that would help reduce traffic congestion by providing the latest traveler information for the different modes of travel.
Redmon was chosen since the firm has extensive regional transit experience from their work with Arlington County's Commuter Page Web site; responsible for implementing the new statewide Virginia 511 Web site; and Redmon has the Redmon Digital Signage System (RDSS) - a commercial, off-the-shelf digital signage infrastructure that Redmon has already deployed in a number of locations. Using the RDSS as a basis for the effort, Redmon developed a collection of presentation modules focusing on incident and construction data (from Virginia 511), transit schedules (provided by Arlington County), live traffic camera images (from VDOT), and travel times and traffic speeds (from a VDOT partnership with INRIX Corp.).
