3D
Like all other Redmon technologies, we consider 3d (in all forms) to be a tool to apply where appropriate and effective. Redmon 3d technologies represent an important part of our design and programming toolkit, whether the 3d is in the form of pre-rendered graphics, backgrounds, and “virtual sets”, or rendered “on-the-fly” for dynamic immersive experiences.
Utilizing and creating innovative and unique 3d graphics requires a broad spectrum of capabilities, all supported in-house. For 3d development we use a broad collection of creation and presentation tools to analyze, model, texture, and render elements at the level of complexity appropriate to the project. Tools we consistently rely on include (but aren’t limited to) 3d Studio Max, Truespace, Poser, and Quest 3d.
Creating pre-rendered 3d media is effective for elements that go beyond the capacity of a conventional budget. In a number of multi-hour training pieces, Redmon has combined pre-rendered backgrounds with photography to create virtual sets. These have represented courtrooms, speeding sports cars, and newsrooms. Where budget, scheduling, and talent did not provide or allow for a live shoot, Redmon has also combined photo-realistic 3d characters and photographic backgrounds.
Redmon pre-rendered 3d is not limited to images. 3d elements for colliding and exploding submarines, ships, and torpedoes were generated for the new U-505 Experience at the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry. Extensive 3d animations were also developed for interactives in the ClearChannel Communication’s traveling Space exhibit, exhibits for the DEA museum, and a visitor’s center in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.
Beyond pre-rendering, live 3d allows the graphics to respond dynamically to user input and render the results on-the-fly. Redmon live 3d systems are currently in use at the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry in simulations that allow visitors to fire a torpedo at a target ship, use a navigation periscope to identify landmarks and enemy ships, and to cooperatively control a submarine on a combat mission.
