Redmon developed interactives for the U-505 Submarine Exhibit for the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry (MSI). It is the only German submarine in the United States, and one of only five remaining WWII U-Boats on display in the world. In a collection of immersive experiences, visitors are invited to become one of the crew and re-live the history and technology of a U-boat.
Redmon was responsible for designing and developing several interactives for the U-505 exhibit including: Attack Periscope, Navigation Periscope, Buoyancy, Dive Trainer, and Enigma.
The Attack Periscope interactive enables visitors to assist the Captain with an attempt to target and sink an enemy ship. The Navigation Periscope interactive has the visitor on patrol in a U-boat forced to surface, rapidly attempting to identify threats (such as aircraft or enemy destroyers) and navigation points in the harbor above them. Both interactives use extensive, dynamic 3D renderings to bring the experience to life.
In the Buoyancy interactive, visitors use the principles of buoyancy to understand how the U-505 was able to adjust its depth. A Redmon-produced widescreen animated short film gives the visitor conceptual background for a physical interactive developed by Design Craftsmen.
In Dive Trainer, a recreation of the U-505s control room is the setting where visitors take the role of planesmen, teaming up to control the subs bow and stern planes to maneuver the sub. Interactive scenarios include a controlled dive, crash dive and emergency surface where the participants struggle to control the sub around dangerous depth charges, fires, and enemy ships. A large plasma display overhead shows the status of the U-boat in 3D and reflects the motion of the submarine in response to the steering commands.
