As an extension to the newly opened Fort Necessity / National Road Interpretive Center in southwestern Pennsylvania, the National Park Service contracted Design and Production and Redmon Group to provide a kiosk system to assist visitors to the Center with locating other places of interest in the Laurel Highlands area. Designed to be an adjunct to the traditional rack of local attraction pamphlets the kiosk provides live internet links to regional attractions.
The kiosk was developed with a customized Web browser. This browser system is designed to provide effective internet access to designated sites without allowing visitors to browse the internet freely. The sites available to the kiosk are under direct client management using a back-end administrative utility. Beyond the internet capabilities, to entice visitors to use the system, the kiosk provides an attractive photographic collage of images from the National Road, Fort Necessity, and the Laurel Highlands area. The stability of the kiosk is ensured by the incorporation of the Redmons kiosk components: Coordinator and Manager.
