The U.S. Capitol Visitor Center is the newest addition to the United States Capitol. At nearly 580,000 square feet, the Visitor Center is the largest project in the Capitol's more than two-century history and is approximately three quarters the size of the Capitol itself. The facility opened in late 2008 and contains space for exhibits, visitor comfort, food service, two orientation theaters, an auditorium, gift shops, security, a service tunnel for truck loading and deliveries, mechanical facilities, storage, and office space for the House and Senate. To accompany the opening of this new facility, the Architect of the Capitol (caretakers of the Capitol) wanted to create a website (the first for the U.S. Capitol) to give visitors news and information in preparation for their visit.
Redmon worked extensively with representatives of the Architect of the Capitol, the U.S. House of Representatives, the U. S. Senate, and our partners at Belmont, Inc. in realizing an effective, attractive, informative, and easily maintained Web site. The site, located at www.visitthecapitol.gov, is an entirely new design being managed in the Rhythmyx Content Management System. The site is fully section-508 compliant and includes Flash-based interactive maps and extensive resources for visitors and the press.
