Redmon re-designed an already existing Commuter Store in Crystal City and works with Arlington County to design new Commuter Stores. The Commuter Stores provide residents, visitors and those working in Arlington with convenient, one-stop shopping for schedules, fares, and information about the many transportation options available in the Washington Metropolitan Area. Arlington wanted a new high-tech look with less clutter and an overall improvement in general appearance, which would foster an environment of efficiency and responsiveness to commuter needs.
The new Commuter Stores feature a more streamlined design, both in the store itself and in the back office area. Redmon developed media such as an interactive map on a large plasma screen that replaces the posters that once hung on the walls. These maps have pan and zoom capabilities and the ability to display a variety of bus and train routes throughout the Washington Metropolitan area. Computers with Internet connections provide customers with access to ride guides. LCD panels play continuous video loops developed by Redmon that advertise the various ways the Commuter Store can help its customers. RSS feeds are displayed on the LCD screens keeping commuters up to date on the latest news, weather, and sports scores. Finally, large screen LCDs or Plasmas display menus of services available to the public.
The interactive maps were built with Macromedia Flash and custom designed software runs the software on the screens behind the service counters. The introduction of large screen displays to replace paper-based information and advertising has resulted in the high-tech look and feel that the client was seeking.
