Inspired by its mission to encourage more efficient means of transportation in the Arlington region, the Commuter Assistance Program of Arlington County set out to provide an online one-stop shopping site for tickets, tokens, and passes for transit systems in the Washington, D.C. area. Today, the CommuterDirect Web site is processing over $6 million a year in transit passes. The system enables easy access to transit tickets and passes for the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, including: Metrorail/Metrobus, Virginia Railway Express, MARC, Alexandria DASH, Montgomery RideOn, PRTC OmniRide, and Arlington Transit (ART). The site provides services for not only individual commuters but also includes a corporate services component, which enables organizations to efficiently manage transportation benefits for employees.
As the lead designer and developer of the system, Redmon worked with Arlington County to design a system that is both flexible and scalable. Redmon created a complex database-model that provides automatic fare computation, ticket sales, processing, shipping, and order tracking. Arlington personnel can easily access the sales system and utilize custom administrative capabilities to process orders, run usage reports, and track ROI. To help expedite sales, the program incorporates a diverse payment system that accepts major credit cards, Metrocheks, Commuter Choice Maryland, and a customer option for accessing personal checking accounts.
